Half-Life 2 is fairly linear so, you won’t be wasting much time getting lost. It’s a true FPS game so, load up and charge on.
Walkthroughs pretty much consist of showing you how to survive each area. There isn’t any strategy involved except in how to kill hostiles and incur as little damage as possible.
